Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong is proud to announce the Sheriff's Office has awarded our Citizen Service Award to Landen Conner, a student at Carpenters Middle School. Representatives from the Sheriff's Office, Carpenters Middle School, and Landen's family were on hand for the small ceremony this morning at the school.
On January 16, 2022, Landen and his mom and brother were traveling on Allegheny Loop Road when the vehicle left the roadway, overturned, and landed in a creek. The temperatures were in the 20s, and it was snowing when the accident occurred. When BCSO Deputy Benjamin Peagler arrived on the scene, he learned that Landen pulled his mother and 8-year-old brother from the vehicle and to safety. Landen's mom told deputies that she was trapped in her seat and unable to remove her seatbelt, while her head was elevated just above the water. Landen acted quickly and removed his mother's seatbelt and opened the sunroof of the vehicle and was able to pull her out of the vehicle. He then assisted his brother out of the vehicle safely. Deputy Peagler said that Landen's quick actions and his ability to work under extreme pressure were instrumental in saving his family from greater injury or possible death. Landen's heroic and selfless act that day made a significant impact on the lives of his mother and brother.
This commendation is awarded very seldom and only in extraordinary circumstances when the individual acts in a brave and selfless manner.
Thank you for your bravery! We believe you are on a path to greatness!
