We received some blessings this week that we are thankful for. Some of you may know that today is "National Donut Day" and as a kind gesture, or maybe as a bad "cop" joke, we received a couple of separate donut deliveries this week. We'd like to thank the Salvation Army "Donut Lassies" for bringing donuts to our troops on Wednesday. You can read more about the "Donut Lassies" in the photo with this post. We'd also like to thank the law firm of O'Neil, Parker, & Williamson for adding inches to our waistline with their donut delivery this morning. Seriously, we appreciate the thoughtfulness of these organizations!
In addition, this morning we received a visit from some of the members of the "Knit Wits" of Fairview United Methodist Church in Maryville. For the past few weeks, these ladies worked feverishly to knit and crochet comfort dolls, also known as Izzy Dolls, which they donated to us for our deputies to carry in their cruisers to give to children who may need comfort during an incident. These handcrafted dolls are unique and colorful, and we are thankful to these ladies for donating their work for the benefit of Blount County's children. The concept of the Izzy Doll came about in the early 1990s when Canadian Armed Forces member MCpl. Mark Isfeld was on a peacekeeping mission in Croatia and came upon a doll laying in a pile of rubble and realized a little girl lost her doll. MCpl. Isfeld's mom began knitting dolls for her son to hand out to children he came across while serving overseas. He continued this mission until 1994 when he was killed in an explosion while guiding an armoured personnel carrier. The tradition of the Izzy dolls, or comfort dolls, continues, and they are now made and distributed to children around the world. If anyone is interested in helping the "Knit Wits" with their mission of handcrafting comfort dolls for our community, you can call the Fairview United Methodist Church office at (865)983-2080.
Sheriff James Berrong doesn't take the kind and thoughtful gestures of the members of our community for granted, and we are all thankful for your support!
