Sheriff James Lee Berrong is proud of our group of STAND (Sheriff and Teens Against Negligent Driving) class students who received certificates this afternoon following a 10 hour course of instruction Friday night and Saturday at the Sheriff’s Office driving track.
Twenty-one students received instruction on the fundamentals of driving. During the 10 hour course, the teens, who have their driving permit or their graduated license, were taught proper steering techniques, braking, backing, parking, collision avoidance, the perils of distracted driving, and other driving topics. They also heard an impact statement from Mrs. Hazel Hughes who lost her son due to a distracted driving accident several years ago. The students represented all high schools in Blount County. The instructors are Sheriff’s deputies from the training staff who are all certified driving instructors.
We saw improvement from all of the students in this class. Our STAND class is one of our most popular offerings, and we are happy to provide the opportunity. We will keep you posted about our upcoming STAND offerings.
Thank you to everyone who participated and donated lunch and water for the class!
