Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong is proud to announce the Sheriff’s Office received two statewide awards today at the Tennessee Highway Safety Office Lifesavers & Law Enforcement Challenge Conference held this week in Franklin, Tennessee.
The Sheriff’s Office is honored to receive recognition in two categories. The BCSO placed third overall in the category of Tennessee law enforcement agencies with between 101 and 200 sworn officers. The judging was based on 2021 traffic initiatives and statistics that include agency strength in the areas of policies and guidelines on seatbelt usage; speed enforcement and impaired driving; training of officers, public information and education in the areas of occupant protection, child safety seat initiatives, public awareness related to distracted driving, and other traffic initiatives; enforcement activity, and the effectiveness of efforts in all of the above areas. We’d like to congratulate the Kingsport Police Department and the Bartlett Police Department who received first and second place, consecutively, in this category.
In addition, the BCSO also received recognition in the special category of Motorcycle Safety. The judging was based on 2021 traffic safety statistics, initiatives, and public information efforts as it relates to motorcycle safety.
The BCSO works closely throughout the year with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office, in conjunction with National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, by way of educational resources and grant funding to place additional deputies on our roadways during nights and on weekends. The BCSO also receives grants to place more deputies in the area of U.S. Highway 129 known as the “Dragon” throughout the year to temper speeding and reckless driving on this dangerous 11.2 mile stretch of highway that includes 318 curves.
The BCSO participates in the Law Enforcement Challenge every year beginning in 2003, and we consistently receive state and national recognition and awards in the area of traffic safety.
Sheriff Berrong would also like to congratulate Maryville Police Department for receiving the SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) Award at today’s ceremony.
In addition, we’d like to offer congratulations to the Dover Police Department in West Tennessee on winning the Best Looking Cruiser competition. Thank you to EVERYONE who voted for our cruiser!
