The Roane State Raiders volleyball team began their defense of their 2021 NJCAA Region VII championship at home Tuesday night against Walters St. The first game of 2022 didn’t end like the Raiders’ last meeting with the Senators, with Roane State falling, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15 and 25-21).
Six-foot four-inch sophomore Whitney Thompson, a transfer from California’s Cuesta Junior College, led the Raiders with eight kills and eleven points. On the season, Thompson has a total of 54 kills in five games.
Meanwhile on Tuesday night, freshman libero Keely Stillwell paced the team with 18 digs, bringing her season total to 93.
On August 19 and 20, the Raiders participated in the Opening Weekend Tournament in Rockford, IL. On the first day, the Raiders were shut-out by Muskegon (25-18, 25-22 and 25-14) and then lost a five-set battle to Southwestern Michigan (16-25, 27-25, 25-17, 22-25 and 15-10).
On the second day of the tournament, the Raiders faced off against Parkland Community College. The Raiders fought hard but ultimately fell to the nation’s top-ranked team, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20 and 25-12).
The RSCC women pulled out a win in their final tourney appearance against Kellogg, 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-19).
Tuesday’s loss dropped the Raiders’ record to 1-4 on the young season (0-1 in conference).
Roane State returns to conference action on Tuesday, Sept.13 at Cleveland State and a non-conference home match against Bryan College JV on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
