Maryville is in sixth place and within striking distance of a higher finish after Round 1 of the Maryville College Invitational.
Wind River Golf Club was the winner Monday, with only Point at 295 firing a sub-300 team round. The Skyhawks are 10 strokes clear of second-place Bob Jones (305) and Hampden-Sydney (305). Walters State (311) and Belhaven (312) are just ahead of the Scots, who opened at 30-over-par 318.
Tristen Evans with a 3-over 75 is tied for sixth place on the individual leaderboard. Colton Novotny shot 78, Joe Quinlan 82 and Jacob Dunlap 83 to round out the Maryville scoring. Reid Woods at 8-over-par 80 was the best player on Maryville's B team, with Joshua Cornell leading the way for Maryville C.
"It's good for us to be able to play on our home course," Maryville head coach Anthony Monaco said. "I'd like for us to play a little better, but hopefully tomorrow we turn it around and climb back up the leaderboard.
"Our team goals for the fall are under-300 rounds, and we have one under our belt and three that haven't been. Just trying to get more consistent. We have the talent, but we haven't quite put it all together. Our goal by the end of the fall is to be within that 300-298 range on a consistent basis."
