Maryville was able to match the up-tempo pace of Birmingham-Southern, defeating the Panthers 87-77 on Day 1 of the Oglethorpe Classic in Atlanta.

Maryville held Birmingham-Southern to its second-lowest point total of the season. Coming into Friday's contest, the Panthers were averaging 102.7 points, while holding their opponents to 95.0.

The Scots also shined on offense, recording their highest score of the season. After scoring more than 50 points just once in their first four games (57 vs. Ferrum), MC has now scored 80-plus in back-to-back games.

"Now that was a good win," Maryville head coach Darrin Travillian said. "I love how we defended first, and then we attacked with confidence. We checked off every statistical goal we had going into the game except making free throws, and that includes taking two charges.

Maryville's scoring charge was led by Ella Haney, who tallied a season-high 26 points while picking up 10 rebounds to give the Murfreesboro rookie her first collegiate double-double.

Haney wasn't the only Scot to record a double-double in Friday's contest. Emma Huskey scored 16 points to go with a team-high 15 boards. Those numbers mark a career-high in both categories for the second year forward.

Courtney Carruthers contributed a season-high 25 points and led the Scots with a career-high seven assists. Carruthers anchored Maryville's defensive efforts as well, leading the squad in steals with four.

The Scots for the second game in a row shot a season-high percentage from the floor. Maryville finished 36-of-74 for 48.6 percent, led by Huskey's 7-of-10. MC saved its best shooting for the fourth quarter when it counted most, finishing 8-of-13 over those final 10 minutes while outscoring BSC 22-17.

"I was hoping we would shoot it well today," Travillian said. "That's just confidence from seeing shots go in."

MC looks to continue building that confidence. The Scots face off against Oglethorpe on Saturday in search of their third win in as many days. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
