Maryville Men's Track & Field continued winter indoor preparations with a third visit to the Sewanee indoor facility.
This time, it was Clarence McLean's turn to shine for the Sewanee Indoor Invitational, held over the weekend.
The first-year sprinter finished second in the 55m finals with a time of 6.59 seconds. That equates to a 7.03 clocking for the 60m, which would make him the top NCAA Division III first-year 60m sprinter in the South Region. McLean also was an event winner in the 200m with a clocking of 23.80 seconds in his first time running this event. This despite stumbling at the start and costing himself a fraction of a second.
"Being the No. 1 first-year sprinter in the region is quite an accomplishment," Maryville assistant coach Hunter Miniard said. "That was a stand-out performance he gave for us."
Tyler Hunter sparkled in the 55m in his debut entry in this event, reaching the finals and placing third behind McLean with a time of 6.72 seconds. Hunter also debuted in the indoor long jump, placing second with a mark of 6.00 meters on his first attempt. That distance equates to 19 feet, 8 inches, and the coaches want him building toward the 20-foot mark.
"He's going to crush it in outdoor," Miniard said. "Coach Pitts will get him jumping really far."
Chris Cooper in his first try at the 200m finished fourth with a clocking of 24.59.
Trey Hampton competed in the 200m and placed sixth with a time of 25.59.
In the 800m and the mile, Maryville's Parker Owens, Luc Dallaris and Gustavo Hernandez competed in both events for the first time indoors, looking to get a baseline after competing in cross country. Owens was hoping to break 2:30 in the 800m and instead crossed the line in 2:19.49 after a strong finishing lap.
In the 3000m, Steve Cope went out a little fast according to his coaches but the hope is that his 10:06.82 time for this event indoors can be his time for the 3000m steeplechase when outdoor competition begins. Cope finished fourth in the 3000m.
"That was a good job by Steve," Miniard said. "He was hanging in there with those Covenant guys."
Ty Hylwa hit a massive personal record, long jumping 5.59 meters.
Elvin Wagner in the triple jump bounced back from fouls on his first three attempts to post a jump of 11.49 meters.
Joshua Panetta hit a personal record in the shot put with a throw of 7.95 meters.
Cam Robinson in just his second time competing in the weight throw hit 11.20 meters. That was better than a 1-meter improvement over his initial throw back in January, and the coaches made note to compliment Robinson on his result.
