The Roane State Raiders men’s golf team opened the 2023 campaign with a fourth-place finish (out of 14 teams) at the CIU Invitational in Columbia, SC. The team missed a three-way tie for second-place by only one stroke.

In the opening round on Monday, Feb. 20, the Raiders shot a combined 320 for the day. They followed that performance with a much-improved 309 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 629.

St. Andrews and Spartanburg Methodist tied for second place in the invitational. Each team finished with a two-day total of 628. Bryan College claimed first place with a two-day total of 601.

Raiders freshman Kieran McCarthy shot a 152 for the Raiders to earn fifth place and a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Nick Daugherty finished one stroke back at 153.

On Monday, Daugherty aced the 172-yard par three seventeenth hole. It was Daugherty’s first-ever hole-in-one as well as the first one ever recorded in the tournament.

Next up for the Raiders is the Bobby Nichols Invitational hosted by Tennessee Tech on March 12-14. The three-round event will be played at the Sevierville River Course in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
